  5. This version of the Africa Screen Saver contains all the files you need in
  6. order to run it from within Microsoft Windows.  Here are the minimum and
  7. recommended system requirements for running the Africa Screen Saver, which
  8. uses the Wildlife Screen Saver(tm) engine.
  9.  
  10. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  11. ---------------------
  12.   *  Windows 3.1 or later
  13.   *  386 or better microprocessor (486 recommended)
  14.   *  4MB of memory (8MB recommended for anyone using Windows)
  15.   *  256 color display (or more)
  16.   *  Optional sound card if you want to hear the pleasing sounds of Africa
  17.  
  18. Africa will fill your entire screen for any screen size up to 1,024 by 768
  19. pixels.  For screens larger than this, the images will be centered on your
  20. screen.
  21.  
  22. INSTALLING THE AFRICA SCREEN SAVER
  23. ----------------------------------
  24.   1.  Make sure all the files are in a single directory.  If these files are
  25.       on a CD-ROM or floppy disk, make a directory on your hard disk and copy
  26.       the files to your hard disk.
  27.   2.  From within Windows, double-click on the SETUP.EXE file.  This program
  28.       does not install the Africa Screen Saver files -- but you must run it
  29.       before running WILDLIFE.EXE.
  30.   3.  From within Windows, duoble-click on the WILDLIFE.EXE file.
  31.   4.  If you want this screen saver to run each time you start Windows,
  32.       click on the Settings button, then check the option that says
  33.       "Run Wildlife when Windows starts" and click on the OK button.

  35. USING WILDLIFE
  36. --------------
  37. We've tried to make using our screen saver as simple as possible, but there
  38. are a couple of features that may not be obvious.
  39.  
  40.   Preview a Module
  41.      You can see a preview of any module in two steps. First, whenever you
  42.      click on a module name, you'll see a small still image to remind you what
  43.      the module looks like. If you then click on this preview image, Wildlife
  44.      will switch to screen saver mode and run that module.
  45.  
  46.   Using the Randomizer
  47.      You can have Wildlife switch between your favoriate modules using the
  48.      Randomizer. The randomzier will be active whenever the name *Randomizer*
  49.      is highlighted in the list of modules (this name is ALWAYS first in the
  50.      list).

  52.      Whenever any module other than *Randomizer* is highlighted, Wildlife will
  53.      run only that module.

  55.   Muting Sound
  56.      If you have a sound card installed Wildlife will automatically play
  57.      sounds for you. You can turn this feature off for all modules, or just
  58.      for specific modules. To mute all modules, uncheck the Mute all modules
  59.      check box. Check this box again to turn the sound back on.

  61.      You can also mute the sound on individual modules using the Mute check
  62.      box that appears at the very top of the Wildlife window.

  64. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  65. --------------------------
  66. Q: I can't get WILDLIFE.EXE to run.  Why not?
  67.  
  68.    A: You probably need to run the SETUP.EXE program.  If you're wondering
  69.       what this program does and why you need to run it, you'll find this
  70.       addressed below in another question.

  72. Q: How reliable is the Wildlife Screen Saver engine used by Africa?
  73.  
  74.    A: We're very proud of our screen saver and believe that it is the most
  75.       reliable screen saver on the market.  The Wildlife engine is actually
  76.       an update of an engine that has been shipping in a commercial product
  77.       since October 1993.  We have had very few bug reports from our many
  78.       users, and none of the bug reports (knock on wood) have been crashes
  79.       or reports of damaged or lost data.

  81.       Here's a bit of techno-babble: Part of the reason for this level of
  82.       reliability is that all of the Windows knowledge and hairy code is
  83.       contained in the central engine rather than in the modules. What this
  84.       means is that any time we fix a bug that appeared in one module, we
  85.       fixed that same bug in ALL modules.

  87. Q: Will the Wildlife Screen Saver engine slow down my other programs?
  88.  
  89.    A: Your programs will run at full speed as long as Wildlife hasn't
  90.       "blanked" your screen.  Once your screen blanks, your other programs
  91.       that are running in the background may slow down a little since
  92.       Wildlife does require time to animate your screen.  For most people,
  93.       this will never be noticable.  However, if you're concerned about
  94.       slow-downs, you can adjust the Animation Priority in the Settings
  95.       dialog box to slow down Wildlife's animations while other programs
  96.       are performing heavy calculations.  Or you can temporarly turn off
  97.       Wildlife by unchecking the On check box that appears at the top of
  98.       the Wildlife main window.  Simply check the On box again to re-enable
  99.       Wildlife.

  101. Q: What is the Wildlife Screen Saver, I thought this was the Africa Screen
  102.    Saver?
  103.  
  104.    A: The name Wildlife Screen Saver refers to the engine, or software, that
  105.       runs all the modules we've created for the Africa Screen Saver.  We
  106.       know this is a little confusing, but the engine is a general-purpose
  107.       engine that you can expect to see used by other screen savers in the
  108.       future, so we wanted to give it a more generic name than "Africa."

  110. Q: How do I remove the Africa Screen Saver?
  111.  
  112.    A: We hope you'll like Africa enough so you'll never want to remove it.
  113.       But if this tragic day should ever come, removing Africa is very easy:
  114.       
  115.       1) First, if you have Africa set to start each time you run Windows,
  116.          display the Africa main window.
  117.       
  118.       2) Then click on the Settings button to display the Settings dialog
  119.          box.
  120.       
  121.       3) Uncheck the box labeled "Run Wildlife when Windows starts" and
  122.          click the OK button.

  124.       4) Now quit Wildlife by clicking on the Quit button.

  126.       5) At this point you can delete all of the files for this product,
  127.          which should all be in the same directory.

  129. Q: What does the SETUP.EXE program do and when do I need to run it?
  130.  
  131.    A: The Wildlife Screen Saver engine displays dialog boxes with a nice
  132.       3-D effect using a part from Microsoft called CTL3DV2.DLL. If you get
  133.       an error message from Windows to the effect "...cannot find specified
  134.       file (or one of its components)" or "cannot find CTL3DV2.DLL", you
  135.       need to run SETUP.EXE.  This program will install the CTL3DV2.DLL file
  136.       in the proper location in Windows so Wildlife will run properly.

  138.       For you techno friends: SETUP.EXE will not overwrite newer versions of
  139.       CTL3DV2.DLL.
